Artificial intelligence in mediation processes: a highly qualified help

In the case of the ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence application, a prompt is the set of written or voice-dictated orders with which you interact with artificial intelligence (AI) to obtain an intelligent response from this intelligence. 

The prompt is an important part of the text input that is provided to a language model like ChatGPT, as it is the text that is used to start the conversation and the model to generate a valuable and coherent response. The application of AI, as in the case of ChatGPT, offers revolutionary possibilities in the field of conflict mediation. From the mediator's perspective, this technology can be an invaluable tool in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of dispute resolution processes. Firstly, ChatGPT can act as a virtual assistant for the mediator, providing relevant information and resources about the conflict at hand. It can analyze large amounts of data and documents related to the case, allowing the mediator to quickly access key information and background information, which is essential for making informed decisions.

Additionally, AI can help in identifying patterns and trends in conflict resolution. By analyzing historical data from similar cases, ChatGPT can offer recommendations based on the likelihood of success of certain mediation strategies, giving the mediator a more robust and informed view to guide the process. In direct interaction with conflicting parties, ChatGPT can play a vital role. It can act as a neutral and objective communication channel, facilitating conversation between the parties without prejudice or emotions. This can help reduce confrontation and promote a more collaborative environment for conflict resolution. Another key advantage is the constant availability of ChatGPT.

Unlike human mediators, artificial intelligence can be available 24/7, allowing conflicting parties to access advice and guidance at any time. This is especially useful in emergency situations or when a quick response is needed. However, it is important to note that AI does not completely replace the work of the human mediator. Empathy, emotional understanding, and the ability to adapt to the unique dynamics of each conflict are essential qualities that only a human mediator can provide.

AI should be used as a complementary tool that enhances the mediator's skills rather than replacing them. In short, the application of AI, such as ChatGPT, offers a range of exciting possibilities in the field of conflict mediation. From providing information and data analysis to facilitating communication and being available at all times, this technology can be a valuable ally for mediators in their search for effective and equitable solutions to conflicts. However, it is essential to maintain a balance between technology and human intervention to ensure that the emotional and social needs of the parties involved are adequately addressed.

The text I just shared from “The application…” to “involved”, that is, “everything”, was generated by ChatGPT, without any human correction. The key to obtaining a high-quality text is specifically linked to the richness and fit of the question, that is, the prompt generated to obtain the desired answer.

The prompt manager or prompt mediator function is required to be able to manage ChatGPT properly in order to obtain a near-perfect result.

In the field of conflict resolution, the mediator can use this technology in his or her in-person or remote mediation room, for the purposes of:

Assistance in preparation: obtain relevant information about the conflict and the parties involved.

Idea generation: explore mutually beneficial creative options.

Facilitation of communication: acts as a neutral intermediary to avoid misunderstandings.

Text Analysis: Analyzes and summarizes key documents related to the conflict.

Important: ChatGPT is an additional tool to enhance the work of the mediator.

From the above we can conclude that AI is not going to replace us in our jobs, the one who is going to replace us will be someone who knows how to manage it.

It is very important that in all cases in which we use ChatGPT for a mediation process we must inform the parties of this, in accordance with the ethical norms and standards recommended by the International Consortium for Conflict Resolution online: www. .icodr.org International Council for Online Dispute Resolution, of which I am a founding member (2017). I am currently a member of its board of directors as the first Latin American invited to participate.

In short, the future has arrived and the new glossary of the 21st century mediator must include at least the following terms: AI, ChatGPT, algorithms, blockchain, smart contracts, Internet of Things and big data , among others.

What is stated means being a user who is a friend of technology, not a systems engineer, since this knowledge will keep us positioned in the market and will allow us to face competition in our professional services.
